Carolyn "Jamiliah" Dupree

On November 19, 1957 God blessed this world with a woman that would change lives, and impact those around her. Carolyn Elaine Dupree was born to Geraldine Holmes and Leroy Dupree Jr. in New York, New York. As the oldest of eight children, Carolyn learned the true meaning of family. She was a protector, caregiver, and role model. That is probably the reason why many people called her “Queen.” Carolyn was educated throughout the New York City school system, and attended James Monroe High School. A few years out of high school at the tender age of twenty-one, Carolyn gave birth to her son Yaw Mensa. With her newfound joy of motherhood, Carolyn opened her heart and home to Mitchell Mensa, whom she raised and loved as her own son. As a mother Carolyn stressed the importance of education. It’s evident in the great educational accomplishments of her two children. Yaw and Mitchell were educated throughout the New Jersey education system and both attended college, which made her immensely proud. As much as she loved being a mother, Carolyn’s passion was working with the elderly. Carolyn worked as a Home-Attendant throughout the New York and New Jersey area. Carolyn not only loved her family, but cherished her friends and the community she lived in. Most importantly, Carolyn lived for having fun and looking good. That was evident in her fashion, constant change of hair styles and wigs, her flawless make-up thanks to Mary-Kay Cosmetics, and the ultimate diva move of changing her name to “Jamiliah.” The road wasn't always easy but Carolyn always smiled and kept the faith. Like the angel she is, God called her home on August 28, 2015. Carolyn is preceded in death by her mother Geraldine Holmes-Dupree, her sisters Lottie and Marie Dupree, Alice Williams, her brother Gerald Dupree, her late husband William Vaughn, and her brother-in-law Cordell Furlonge. She is survived by her sons Yaw and Mitchell Mensa, father Leroy Dupree, sister Louise Furlonge, her brothers Michael and Leroy Dupree Jr., and a host of nieces and nephews. Carolyn was a woman of many characteristics: courage, strength, humor, and dedication. Most of all, her love for animals, the elderly, and children is what we will remember the most. Remember to celebrate her life because Carolyn was always one to celebrate every and anything. As much as she was loved and needed, God needed her more.
